RC5-72 the key to MorphOS 1.5

MorphOS 1.5 is still a long time away from getting released to the average user. The reason for this evil are indeed not the missing parts of programs or a lack of motivation in the MorphOS core development team ... there can be only one obvious reason! And that is stipulated clearly and precisely by figures in the CPU/OS Statistik of the Distributed.net RC5-72 project.

Let's face the statistics squarely. Since the release of the MorphOS dnet-client at 19th january 2004 the MorphOS users gathered 20.946 blocks, but MorphOS 1.5 can be released only when we beat the 104.365 blocks of the PPC Amiga users (status: 2004/02/09 - Check the current figures here). Now it is up to us when MorphOS 1.5 will be released ... let the games begin ;)

The above statement should be in no way taken as a call for hostility between Classic and PPC Amiga users. We ask you to join the "Distributed Amiga" Team so the words are not just written.

Enough chatter! How do we start now?
As easy as winking, just follow our step by step guide.

1. Download the current version of the dnet client for MorphOS

2. Extract the LHA archive with LHA. This will create a new directory named "dnetc_mos". To extract just enter the following command in a shell. We assume that the archive is in "Ram:" and will be extracted into "Work:".

lha x ram:dnetcxxx-morphos-ppc.lha work:

3. Switch to "Work:dnetc_mos" in your Ambient and double-click the beastlike handsome dnetc icon - mooooo. The cow wants some configuration now. Switch to "General Client Options" with <1> and <Enter>.

- <1> [Your email address] and <Enter>, now enter your eMail address. In any circumstance enter a working eMail address and confirm with <Enter>. THERE IS NO RISK OF GETTING SPAMMED!

Go back to the main menu with <0> [Return to main menu] and <Enter> and then switch with <2> and <Enter> to "Buffer and Buffer Update Options".

- <4> [Checkpoint Filename] and <Enter>, just put in "Checkpoint" and confirm with <Enter>. The checkpoint file is used to save the calculations in between, so you won't lose it at an unscheduled reboot.

- As we want to get MorphOS 1.5 soon we disable the OGR project and concentrate on the RC5-72 project alone. Press <9> [Load-work precedence] and <Enter>. Change the settings from "OGR,RC5-72" to "OGR=0,RC5-72" and confirm with <Enter>.

Go back to the main menu with <0> [Return to main menu] and <Enter> and again <0> [Save settings and exit] and <Enter> to save the newly-created settings. The configuration is nearly complete now. Let's get the cow to moo for the first time for real by double-clicking it. Before you do that make sure you are connected to the internet, to allow download of the first blocks from the keyserver. If everything worked out fine you should see a progress meter in the dnet client window. Now MorphOS 1.5 isn't that far anymore. If you don't want to start the client everytime manually you can add it to your WBStartup by double-clicking "Add to WBStartup", this will make the cow moo on every start.

How do I know we are moving towards MorphOS 1.5 with great pace?

1. the RC5-72 project has its own page where you can access all statistics, even the CPU/OS statistic. Please note that these pages are updated only once a day, so a daily visit is more than enough. http://stats.distributed.net/projects.php?project_id=8
2. you can reconstruct your own efforts by changing to the just mentioned page and entering your eMail address at "Participant Stats", then click on [search]. Shortly thereafter you can see your personal statistics.
If the entered eMail address is not found then it's probably written wrong or the user didn't send any blocks before the daily update and therefore didn't enter the statistics yet.
There is a button on the bottom of your personal page reading "Please email me my password" that you can click on. After that an eMail is on its way with your ID and password. With the ID and password you can now edit some settings in "Edit your Information". You can also join a team now. This should be the "Distributed Amiga" Team, of course. Just click "Join our team" on the following page and confirm with your ID and password. http://stats.distributed.net/team/tmsummary.php?project_id=8&team=200

From now on the Pegasos can show its power and we can delight ourselves with statistics and soon with MorphOS 1.5 ;)
